Chicago searches split by neighborhood and suburb
Chicago is the third-largest city in the United States, with 2.74 million people at the 2020 census. The metro area had about 9.62 million residents, spread across 19 counties in three states. For a local business, that size means one thing: almost nobody searches for "Chicago" alone when they need a plumber or a cleaner. They search for their neighborhood, their suburb or "near me", and Google fills in the rest from where they are.
A Chicago site works when it tells customers and Google exactly which parts of the city you cover.
What Chicago customers search for
House cleaning has the most searches of the trades we checked, at 12,100 a month for "house cleaning chicago". Dentists come next at 8,100, then plumbers and hair salons at 5,400 each. Auto repair and therapists both show 3,600. Restaurants have far more searches than any of these, so they're left out of the chart.

What ranks on Google for "web design chicago"
Here are the first organic results Google showed us for "web design chicago" (October 2026, via DataForSEO):
| # | Site | Page title | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | blacksmith.agency | Top Chicago Web Design Agency | List or ranking |
| 2 | siteitnow.com | Choosing The Best Chicago Web Design Company | List or ranking |
| 3 | revenuebase.ai | Top 25 Custom web design agencies based in Chicago, ... | List or ranking |
| 4 | bark.com | Find a Web Designer in Chicago | Directory, forum or social |
| 5 | siteitnow.com | SITE IT NOW Digital Marketing Company: Web Design Agency | Company or service page |
| 6 | quora.com | What are the best web designing services in Chicago, IL? | Directory, forum or social |
Chicago's first page is mostly rankings and directories: agency lists, Bark and a Quora thread. Only one result is a single company's own service page. People searching here are comparing, so a business site that shows a clear price and real work tends to stand out against list pages that say little about cost.
The places Chicagoans name in their searches
- North Side: Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Andersonville, Uptown, Rogers Park, Lincoln Square
- West and Northwest Side: Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, Humboldt Park, Ukrainian Village, Portage Park
- South and Southwest Side: Hyde Park, Bronzeville, Bridgeport, Pilsen, Chinatown, Beverly, Chatham
- The Loop and nearby: the Loop, River North, the West Loop, the South Loop, Streeterville
- Suburbs: Evanston, Oak Park, Skokie, Cicero, Naperville, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Orland Park
- Expressways: the Kennedy, the Dan Ryan, the Eisenhower, the Stevenson and Lake Shore Drive
- Landmarks: Willis Tower, Millennium Park and Cloud Gate, Navy Pier, Wrigley Field, O'Hare and Midway
Chicago housing has its own vocabulary. Two-flats, greystones, bungalows in the Bungalow Belt and high-rise condos along the lake each bring different jobs. A plumber's page for Portage Park can talk about older bungalows and their basements. A cleaner's page for Streeterville can talk about condo buildings with doormen and freight elevator bookings. Small details like these make a page read local.

This is the map for a plumber search from Chicago. Note the sponsored listings above it. Map rankings depend on your Google Business Profile, reviews and distance, and your site supports them by repeating the same details.
Seasons shape Chicago searches
Chicago winters are hard on houses. Frozen and burst pipes, furnace failures and ice dams bring urgent calls from December to February. Spring brings basement flooding and sump pump jobs. Summer is AC, roofing and landscaping season.
A good site plans for these swings:
- A page for each seasonal emergency you handle, ready before the season starts
- A clear "same-day" or "24/7" line if you offer it, with the phone number right next to it
- A seasonal banner on the home page you can change in a minute
What a Chicago business site should include
| Element | Why it matters here |
|---|---|
| Service area by neighborhood | City searches are too broad, and travel across the city takes time |
| Phone number at the top on mobile | Many calls come from phones, often in an urgent moment |
| Reviews near the top | Chicagoans compare several businesses before calling |
| License details | Chicago requires a city license for many trades, including general contractors |
| Photos of local jobs | Real two-flats and bungalows beat stock photos |
A result from a site we built
This is real Search Console data from one of our client sites, name hidden. It's not a Chicago business. Every market differs, so take it as an example of what a planned site can do, not as a promise.
Mistakes we see on Chicago small business sites
- "Serving Chicagoland." Without neighborhoods or suburbs, the site doesn't match local searches.
- One page for every suburb, with the name swapped. Thin, copied pages don't rank and look spammy to customers.
- No winter content. The busiest season for many trades goes uncovered.
- Old reviews only. A review from 2019 doesn't reassure anyone. Ask recent customers.
- Slow pages. Big uncompressed photos are the usual cause. We compress every image.
Choosing who builds your Chicago site
Search "web design chicago" and you'll see agencies in River North and the West Loop, freelancers, and directories ranking both. For a local service business, the right question isn't who has the flashiest portfolio. It's who will plan pages around how your customers search in your part of the city. Ask any designer you talk to how they'd decide which neighborhood pages you need, who owns the domain, and what you'll pay each month after launch. If the answers are vague, keep looking.
How we build a Chicago site
- Use the calculator with your trade and Chicago to see local demand and a page plan.
- Tell us your area, down to the neighborhoods and suburbs you really take jobs in.
- We write each page with local details you give us and the ones we know.
- We design for phones first, with your phone number and reviews always in reach.
- You review the draft, we launch, and we connect your Google Business Profile.
How Chicago searchers phrase it
Google data from DataForSEO shows the same need typed many ways, and each phrasing hints at what the person wants:
| Search | Searches a month | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| web page design chicago | 1,900 | Looking for someone to build pages |
| web design chicago il | 1,600 | Adds the state, often to filter out other Chicagos |
| web design agency chicago | 480 | Expects a team, not a freelancer |
| web design firms in chicago | 480 | Comparing several providers |
| affordable web design chicago | 110 | Price is the first filter |
| wordpress web design chicago | 50 | Already chose the platform |
Your own customers do the same thing with your trade. Someone typing "emergency plumber Logan Square" wants a phone number now. Someone typing "kitchen remodel cost Naperville" wants prices and photos. One page can't answer both well, which is why we plan pages from searches rather than from a fixed template.
Price for a Chicago website
$299 base, $15 per extra page, never more than $630, the same price we charge anywhere. Chicago businesses that cover several neighborhoods and suburbs usually need a few extra pages.
