Websites for Indiana businesses
Indiana has a clear center, Indianapolis, but most of the state's businesses work somewhere else. Fort Wayne is the second-largest city and a hub for northeast Indiana. South Bend, Elkhart and Mishawaka form Michiana on the Michigan line. Northwest Indiana, from Hammond and Gary to Valparaiso and Crown Point, is part of the Chicago metro. Lafayette and West Lafayette have Purdue, Bloomington has IU, Evansville sits on the Ohio River across from Kentucky, and Southern Indiana towns like Jeffersonville and New Albany are really Louisville suburbs.
So customers in Indiana search by their own city or town, and often by region. A site that says "serving Indiana" doesn't match anything they type. A site that names Carmel, Fishers, Valparaiso or Mishawaka does.
If your business is in Indianapolis itself, our page on web design in Indianapolis covers the city and its neighborhoods. This page is for owners in the rest of the state and for businesses that work across several regions.
Where Indiana searches for web design
We pulled Google Ads volumes for "web design" plus Indiana's main cities.
Indianapolis leads at 720 searches a month, which is why it has its own page. Fort Wayne is second at 260, and DataForSEO shows "web design fort wayne indiana" at 260 too. Lafayette shows 90. South Bend sits at 40, and Evansville, Carmel and Bloomington around 30 each. Fishers doesn't register, though it's one of the fastest-growing suburbs; owners there likely search Indianapolis or Carmel.

That's the Google map for plumbers in Fort Wayne. Older homes, hard water and cold winters keep plumbing searches steady all year.
| What people type into Google | US searches per month |
|---|---|
| web design indiana | 110 |
Statewide phrases are modest. "Web design indiana", "indiana web design" and "web design in indiana" each show about 110 searches a month. DataForSEO also reports "web design northwest indiana" at 50 and "northwest indiana web design" at 40, which shows how strongly that region identifies on its own.

Indiana's regions
The Indianapolis suburbs
Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville, Greenwood, Plainfield, Avon and Brownsburg. These are among the fastest-growing places in the Midwest, with big new subdivisions, HOAs and young families. Many customers are newcomers who rely on search and reviews. A Hamilton County contractor should have a page for each suburb they serve, with photos from jobs there.
Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana
Fort Wayne, Auburn, Huntington, Warsaw and Angola, plus the lakes around Kosciusko and Steuben counties. Manufacturing, medical device makers around Warsaw and lake homes that need docks, decks and seasonal services.
Michiana
South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Goshen and Granger, plus Niles and Benton Harbor across the line in Michigan. Notre Dame brings visitors and rental housing, and Elkhart is known for RV manufacturing. Amish communities around Shipshewana and Nappanee have builders, furniture makers and craft businesses that sell nationally.
Northwest Indiana
Hammond, Gary, Merrillville, Crown Point, Valparaiso, Portage, Schererville, Munster and Michigan City. Commuters to Chicago, steel mills along the lake and the Indiana Dunes. Many businesses here also work in the south suburbs of Chicago, so pages for both sides of the line help.
Lafayette, Bloomington and Central Indiana
West Lafayette and Bloomington are college towns with large rental markets and steady demand for property managers, cleaners, movers and repair services. Muncie, Anderson, Kokomo and Terre Haute are smaller cities where online competition is often thin.
Southern Indiana
Evansville, Newburgh, Jasper, Columbus, Jeffersonville, New Albany and Clarksville. Evansville businesses often serve Henderson and Owensboro in Kentucky, and the Louisville-area towns are tied to that metro. Columbus has a strong engineering and manufacturing base.

Licensing in Indiana
Indiana doesn't have one statewide license for general contractors. Plumbers are licensed by the state, and many cities and counties register or license electricians, HVAC contractors and builders on their own terms. Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Carmel and others each have their own rules. That patchwork confuses customers, so the site should be clear. We list each license or registration you hold, with the city, county or board that issued it, in the footer and on the about page. If you work in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio or Kentucky, we show those licenses on the pages for those towns.
What Indiana customers search for, by season
- Winter: furnace repair, boiler service, frozen pipes, snow removal and lake-effect snow in the northwest.
- Spring: basement waterproofing, sump pumps, roof repair after storms, lawn care and landscaping.
- Summer: AC repair, decks, concrete, pools, painting and pest control.
- Fall: gutter cleaning, furnace tune-ups, roof checks and leaf removal.
Indiana sees severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in spring and summer, and hail is common. Roofing, siding and restoration companies should have a storm page live before the season, with a clear explanation of how they inspect and how insurance claims work.
Trades that do well online in Indiana
HVAC. Long winters and humid summers mean work all year. Heat pump installs and furnace replacements are common searches, often with financing questions.
Plumbing and drains. Older homes in Fort Wayne, South Bend, Evansville and Terre Haute have aging pipes and sewer lines. Camera inspections and sewer replacement are good page topics.
Roofing and exteriors. Storm and hail work across the state.
Basement waterproofing and foundations. Wet basements are common, and customers research these big-ticket jobs carefully.
Builders and remodelers. Suburban growth around Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Northwest Indiana keeps demand strong.
Landscaping and snow removal. Many companies do both and should switch their main message by season.
Manufacturing and logistics
Indiana has one of the highest shares of manufacturing jobs of any state, with auto parts, RVs, steel, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Its location makes it a logistics hub too. Small suppliers, machine shops, trucking companies and warehouses often have outdated sites, and their buyers search for capabilities, certifications and locations before they call. See websites for manufacturers and websites for trucking companies for how we build those.
Pages we usually plan for Indiana businesses
| Page | When it's worth it |
|---|---|
| Home | Always, naming your base city and main service |
| Service pages | One per service you want to rank for |
| Suburb and town pages | Each place with real searches where you work |
| Cross-border pages | Illinois, Michigan, Ohio or Kentucky towns, if you work there |
| Storm or winter page | Roofing, heating and plumbing |
| About | Licenses, insurance and team |
Lake homes and the dunes
Indiana has more lakes than many people expect, especially in the northeast around Lake Wawasee, Lake Webster, Lake James and the chain of lakes near Angola, and in the north along Lake Michigan near the Indiana Dunes. Lake homes need docks, piers, boat lifts, seawalls, septic systems and seasonal caretaking. Many owners live in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne or Chicago and manage their lake place from a distance. A site that explains how you handle work while owners are away, and gives each lake area its own page, brings steady repeat business.
College towns and rentals
Bloomington, West Lafayette, Muncie, Terre Haute and South Bend have large student populations and many rental houses and apartments. Landlords need property managers, cleaners, painters, handymen, pest control and HVAC companies who can handle turnover between leases. Students and parents search for movers, storage and furnished rentals each August and May. Businesses that serve these markets should mention the schools and neighborhoods by name.
RVs, orthopedics and specialty manufacturing
Elkhart County builds most of the country's RVs, and hundreds of suppliers around Elkhart, Goshen, Nappanee and Middlebury make cabinets, fiberglass, chassis, windows and furniture for them. Warsaw is known as an orthopedic device hub, with many contract manufacturers. These shops sell to other businesses, so their sites need capability pages, certifications, equipment lists and a clear quote request. Even a simple site with those pages often does better than a long brochure.
Selling to customers around Indianapolis without competing with the city page
Businesses in Hamilton, Hendricks, Johnson and Hancock counties often wonder whether to target Indianapolis or their own town. The answer is usually both: a page for each suburb where you do most of your work, and a mention of Indianapolis where it's true. Customers in Fishers or Avon search their own town first, and those pages tend to rank faster because fewer competitors bother to build them.
Southern Indiana and the river towns
Evansville, Newburgh and Mount Vernon sit along the Ohio River with Kentucky on the other side. Madison, Aurora and Lawrenceburg are historic river towns with old brick homes, and many businesses there also serve Cincinnati's west side. The river brings flooding risk, older housing and a steady need for plumbing, foundation and masonry work.
Bloomington and Columbus
Bloomington has IU and limestone quarries; Columbus has Cummins and a famous collection of modern architecture. Both are steady markets for remodelers, landscapers and property services.
Fort Wayne's neighborhoods
Fort Wayne's older neighborhoods, like West Central, South Wayne and Lakeside, have homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, while Aboite, Huntertown and the northeast side have newer subdivisions. Each is searched by name, and a contractor serving the whole city should give the busiest areas their own pages.
Real data from one of our sites
We built this client site and track it in Search Console. It isn't in Indiana and we keep the name private, but it shows the common pattern of a quiet start and steady month-over-month growth.
Mistakes we see on Indiana small business sites
- "Serving Central Indiana." Customers search Carmel, Fishers and Greenwood by name.
- No registration shown. Indiana's rules vary by city, and careful customers check.
- Ignoring the other side of the line. Northwest Indiana businesses often have customers in Illinois.
- Snow and furnace pages that go live in January. Have them up by fall.
- Stock skyline photos. Real photos of your crew and local jobs convert better.
